Easter miracle is the wonder of fresh life
It was the day before
Easter The raw soldier
was tramping along with
his buddies, footsore, “long
past whistling." when his
eyes came across a tree
just bursting into bloom
And suddenly his heart
stood still.
“If God can bring the
wonder of fresh life out of a
thing so dead, imagine." he
said, “what he can do for
me'”
And there began one of
the world's must inspiring
stories The soldier became
Brother Lawrence, a hum
ble monk who found he
could glorify God in the
monastery kitchen where
he worked and whose little
book. “The Practice of the
Presence of God." is one of
the most read pieces of
devotional literature
One wonders whether
seeing those buds coming
to life under the warm spr
mg skies after the dead of
winter. Brother I^iwrence
thought of Lazarus coming
forth into the sunlight -
breathing the “wonder of
fresh life" — after lying in
the cold, dark tomb
In many ways, the
Easter story of the resur
rection and the raising of
Lazarus go together
(.azaruss death occur-
red just before the events
of Holy Week When Jesus
learned that Lazarus had
died, he tried to comfort
the grieving Martha by
saying. “Thy brother will
SAINTS AND SINNERS

rise again " She replied,
probably with a hint of ir-
ritation in her voice. "I
know that he shall rise
again in the resurrection at
the last day " She wasn t
thinking about that
Kealizing she had
misunderstood what he
meant. Jesus tried again
“I am the resurrection and
the life.” he told her
Resurrection was in the
future Yes. there would be
that But “the life" — that
is what he was getting at
"the life" is now and is not
withheld until the last day
It becomes a present
possession whenever Jesus
is there
To prove it, Jesus called
Lazarus forth from the
grave into new life
Ah. but not quite so soon!
As he stood in front of the
grave, which had a large
stone rolled across the
front, Jesus turned to Un-
people who had accom
pamed him to the grave -
those who would be
witnesses to the "wonder of
fresh life" emerging from
the stone-cold, lifeless
tomb — and told them,
"Take ye away the stone "
Miracles follow in se-
quence They begin with
us There is always
something we have to do
first
Sometimes it is to have
faith. “Only believe," said
Jesus, and when people
believed, they were healed
And so are we
Sometimes what we are
called to do before a
miracle can take place in
our lives is simply to be
quiet On one occasion in
his ministry Jesus noticed
that the many people
around him were hungry
and tired after a long day.
and they were getting
restless and nervous
“Make them sit down."
Jesus told his disciples
When the people were
seated on the grass and
quiet, all 5.000 of them were
miraculously fed and
refreshed And so are we
when we cease our anxious
striving and scurrying
about, rest awhile and "let
authentic tidings of invisi
ble things" find their way
into our hearts
Sometimes, as in the
story of Lazarus, the com-
mand to us is “Take ye
away the stone." which
calls for great effort on our
part We must bend our
backs and strain our
muscles and heave, play-
ing our little — but
necessary — part." as Ar-
thur John Gossip puts it
What makes this such an
effort for us is that we. like
Martha, shrink from expos
ing what lies behind the
stone Lazarus had been
dead four days The corpse
would have begun to
decompose The sight could
have been too horrible
And yet nothing can help
us if our hopes, our dreams
and our aspirations —
which in an earlier spr-
ingtime made life so fair
w ith its promises - are left
to lie discarded in a
graveyard
It may require a miracle
to revive them The master
will take care of that But
first we must give him ac
cess to the grave where our
deepest longings and
wishes are buried
