the communist*. The Reds have not
permitted foreign correspondents or
Chinees newsmen from nationalist
China to go to Peiping for the con-

Meanwhile fighting in the civil war •
continued despite the peace talk* in
Peiping.
A government military spokesman
said the communists had taken most

interior committee Saturday
weighed arguments for and against
oonf trmation of Ernest Omening to
continue m governor of Alssks.
Chairman O*Mahoney (D, Wyo.)
indicated * decision win be made soon
—possibly within a matter of a few
days-
The committee worked late Friday
to wind up^ intone day its bearing
these chargee made and denied by
delegation* of Alaskans:
ON*—That Oov. Oruenint ho used
dictatorial method* and sought unduly
to influence legislators in favor of his
program.
Charges Are Denied
TWO—That he campaigned among
Alaskan natives with favored candi-
dates for the territorial legislature.
THREE—That he has hindered the
development of Alaska by his stand
against “absentee ownership.**
Omening took the stand to deny
the charges himself.
He said he had pressed for enact-
ment of his program for ths develop-
ment of Alaska, but wm in no sense
a "dictator” and had no power to be
if he had wanted to be.
**l have come to the conclusion It
is my duty to tell the people what X
think,** he informed the committee.
Tax System Praia**
He added flatly that he had not
campaigned with officials of the
Alaska native service to sponsor cer-
tain candidates.
His entire program has been aimed
at the development of Alaska for the
benefit of Alaska, Oruening said. He
emphasised that he has Insisted on a
balanced budget, and for the first
time this year hi* had enacted a tax
system “worthy of the name.**
A delegation of 44 supporters of the
governor flew to Washington in a
chartered plane, and nine of these
testified in his behalf.
An opposition group of seven from
the territory asked the committee to
reject Omening.
